Formatting Text & Paragraphs
Text Formatting
Select text and use the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts to apply formatting:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| ⌘B | Bold |
| ⌘I | Italic |
| ⌘U | Underline |
| ⌘⇧S | |
| ⌘⇧7 | Numbered list |
| ⌘⇧8 | Bullet list |
You can also select text and press ⌘K to ask AI to reformat it — try "make this a bullet list" or "convert to title case."
Paragraph Formatting
Alignment
| Shortcut | Alignment |
|---|---|
| ⌘L | Left |
| ⌘E | Center |
| ⌘R | Right |
| ⌘J | Justify |
Indentation
Use ⌘] to indent and ⌘[ to outdent.
Spacing
Paragraph spacing (before/after) and line spacing are controlled in the paragraph formatting panel. Access it via the toolbar or right-click context menu.
Styles
Styles are the most powerful formatting tool. Instead of formatting each paragraph manually, apply a named style:
Open the Styles panel
Click the style name in the toolbar (usually shows "Normal") or open the Styles tab in the right sidebar.
Apply a style
Click any style name to apply it to the current paragraph. The formatting updates instantly.
Create a custom style
Format a paragraph the way you want, then click "Create Style" in the Styles panel. Give it a name and it's saved for reuse.
Styles imported from Word documents are preserved exactly. If your .docx uses "Heading 1" and "Body Text" styles, they'll work the same way in Optimaite.
Lists
Bullet Lists
Press ⌘⇧8 to toggle a bullet list. Press Tab to nest, ⇧Tab to un-nest.
Numbered Lists
Press ⌘⇧7 to toggle a numbered list. Numbering follows Word numbering definitions — imported documents preserve their exact numbering schemes (legal numbering like 1.1.1, letter numbering like a/b/c, etc.).
Find & Replace
Press ⌘F to find text in your document. Press ⌘H for find and replace.
